Help Sponsor a Water Well... and Save Lives.

Kenya in DroughtWater in most rural communities in Kenya is collected from rivers and is usually not clean. Long distances are often travelled carrying water.

You can make a difference by helping provide fresh water for domestic use and irrigation for crops. Many people are suffering from malnutrion and in some cases dying.

By giving aid for a water well project you have the opportunity to make a long term improvement to the lives of those living in the local community.

Well water is very pure, and also allows easy irrigation for crops. Most crops can be grown all-season because Kenya is in the equatorial-belt so there is plenty of sun. The soil in most parts of the country is very fertile, however droughts have always been the biggest problem, and the UN estimates previous annual harvest of crops in Kenya to be as low as 25% normal.

Not since 60 years ago UN say, has East Africa seen a similiar drought to the one presently being experienced. Even during a normal wet season there is often not much rain, and with days or weeks without any rain whatsoever, irrigation for crops from a deep water well is often the only way of keeping crops growing.

Helping Kenya drought relief in the form of a water well, provides relief from malnutrition and enables the people to look after themselves because they can get continuous irrigation for their crops, and clean drinking water.

People Carrying Water

My name is Virginia. Digging a water well for my village became my motive for this project to help my village people and others who suffer from lack of water. I am Kenyan by nationality and come from a village called Masimba in the Machakos district. The people in this village now suffer a life-threatening problem because the area is semi arid and there is no water. There are two types of community who live here, i.e. the Kamba, and the Maasai people. The Kamba community mostly relies on farming, and the Maasai community relies on livestock keeping. I believe water is life to all creatures of God. People here travel 100km or even more for water. The weaker cows or goats die on the way because the distance is much too long for them, and the people endure unbearable hardship from the long journeys and loss of their livestock just to procure water which most people in the world take for granted.

If today these people could get a water well in their communities, it would save lives and allow them to grow their crops, raise their livestock, drink fresh water from local wells, and live with dignity.

1) Water for tree plantations that provide firewood

2) Irrigation for farming

3) Small scale farming is good for the area, because the moment water becomes available people will plant vegetables, fruits, and grains, and can take them to the market for selling. Any family can then rely on this kind of a project to educate their children

4) Water storage tanks can store water from the well. Water is pumped to the storage tank using a diesel water pump, which then provides continuous water available from a tap

5) If today this community gets enough supply of water life will be so much easier for them. Parents will be able to take care of their families better because there will be enough food

Drought Problem in Kenya

This initial water well project in Masimba has just been completed and is providing water for crop irrigation and clean drinking water. We are looking for people who can donate towards the next water well project.

Please give something towards cement, bricks, and workers wages. A small donation can make a huge difference to peoples lives here in Kenya. The water from this first water well is already being used to grow four different crops, including maize, which is now waist high and growing strong.

One water well cannot support all of the surrounding community. We desperately need donations for more water wells. Please give what you can. Click on the 'Donate' link and please give whatever you can afford to assist people that are in desperate need of help. Once fresh, clean water is made available to them, these people can then sustain themselves and their families.

We are trying to create a better life for people in rural communities here in Kenya.
